Entomopathogenic fungi as insecticides in forest protection.

The paper presents the knowledge on activity of some entomopathogenic fungi (Beauveria brongniartii, Beauveria bassiana, Paecilomyces farinosus, Metarhizium anisopliae, Verticillium lecanii) against forest pest insects (Lymantria dispar, Dendrolimus pini, Cephalcia abietis, Hylobius abietis, Diprionidae, Scolytidae). Results showed that a successful control of the above mentioned insects could be achieved with the use of the tested fungi. The evaluation of risk connected with the application of entomopatogenic fungi done by experts of the three EU consortia: BIPESCO, RAFBCA and REBECA was also presented. The efficacious strains of entomopathogenic fungi mentioned above and their metabolites, oosporein for B. brongniartii and destruxins for both M. anisopliae and V. lecanii were determined. Analyses showed that the fungal metabolites did not enter the food chain or cause a risk to consumer and animal health, nor cause environmental problems.
