Economic aspects of weed control in maize after atrazine withdrawal.

Three-year field experiments (2006-2008) were conducted to determine the effectiveness of two weed control systems with reduced split dose of herbicides in maize. The first system involved preemergence and post-emergence treatments and the second one two post-emergence (foliage) treatments. Foliage herbicides were applied on weeds at the stage of cotyledons to 4 leaf, regardless of maize growth stage. In trials cost of chemical weed control after atrazine withdrawal was also assessed. In many cases a very high effect of weed control with two treatments of herbicide was recorded. Effect on weed control was similar to atrazine efficiency. Cost of herbicides applied at reduced doses was comparable with atrazine but the total cost increased especially when two independent treatments were performed (i.e. operating costs).
