Tomato plants and commercial seeds were tested by ELISA and RT-PCR for the presence of Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV). Moreover, the infectivity of the virus was tested in a biological test. In ELISA test, 77.8% seeds were infected by ToMV although only 0.5% of the seeds gave positive reactions in the biological test. The differences observed in both kinds of test (ELISA and biological) indicated that the serological (or molecular) test opposite to the biological one was not able to distinguish between infective and non-infective particles of the virus. In RT-PCR reaction from tomato plants as well as seed samples, products of proper size were obtained. The sequences analysis showed 96% identity to a Brazil isolate deposited in the GenBank.
