Factors determining profitability of chemical winter wheat protection.

Winter wheat as a very susceptible species to infection by pathogenic fungi requires the application of plant protection products. Their effectiveness and profitability of application depend on numerous factors. The most important of them are: weather and environmental conditions; managing and organization of production; the intensity of occurrence and harmfulness of occurring pathogens; the amount of obtained yield; costs of protection; and grain selling prices. Field studies were conducted in Poland, from 2001 to 2008, on winter wheat cultivars Mikon and Finezja, to defeine the factors determining the profitability of chemical protection. A high differentiation was stated in the profitability of applying particular fungicides as well as considerable differences between particular vegetative seasons of winter wheat cultivation. In each year, protection treatments were profitable, in spite of high costs being in average of 10% of the value of protected crops.
