The effect of cultivation system on health conditions and yielding of fodder beet.

A field study was carried out during 2007-08 at the Research Station Swadzim belonging to the Poznan University of Life Sciences (Poland). The aim of the study was to determine the effect of difference tillage systems, such as conventional, direct seeding and crop residue, on fodder beet health conditions as well as on root and leaf yield. The results revealed that both root and leaf yield was higher on the treatment with conventional tillage system; however, a significant difference was only proved in case of root yield. There was no evident effect of crop residue on leaf and root yield. Applied systems did not affect the percentage of plants infested by Cercospora leaf spot. Considering the year of the research, there were significant differences in disease occurrence. The higher level of beet disease infestation in 2007 was probably due to favourable weather conditions for the development of the pathogens. Moreover, results also showed that there was no significant effect of crop residue on the level of root damage caused by pest. Beets grown in direct seeding system were invaded by black bean aphid (Aphis fabae) to a smaller extent (8.82%) compared with conventional tillage system (18.4%).
