Predatory mites (Acari: Phytoseiidae) occurring on plants in surrounding of soft fruit plantations.

This paper reviews and summarizes research in European countries on the effects of plant diversity in field margins surrounding crops, and on the occurrence of phytoseiid mites, important biological control agents of phytophagous mites, in these areas. The review includes studies conducted on black currant and raspberry plantations on the abundance, diversity and density of phytoseiids, both on the crop and wild plants. Studies were carried out between 1998 and 2000 on 10 black currant fields and in 2007-2008 on 12 raspberry plantations. The management of pests on soft fruit plantations affected phytoseiid diversity both in the field and on surrounded plants.
