Usefulness of chitosan in the protection of potato against early blight.

A 20-year (2007-08) field experiment was carried out in Poland to investigate the effect of seed potato dressing and plant spraying with the preparation Biochikol 020 PC (chitosan) on potato haulm infestation by Alternaria solani and A. alternata. Vitavax 2000 FS was used as the standard. The inhibitory effect of Biochikol 020 PC on linear growth of A. solani mycelium was also investigated in vitro. In all the treatments where Biochikol 020 PC and the standard fungicide were used, the mean degree of haulm infestation was significantly lower than that in the control. The in vitro response of A. solani depended on the concentration of the preparation. A significant decrease in the linear growth of A. solani mycelium was observed with Biochikol 020 PC at 2.0%.
