Thailand is located in Southeast Asia and shares borders with Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia. It is a constitutional monarchy led by King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the longest-serving head of state in the world, who reigns over some 67 million people. Abhisit Vejjajiva has been prime minister since December 2008 when the Democrat Party formed a coalition government with several groups who splintered from the then prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's power base. The political environment remains unstable, with violent protests breaking out in 2009 and 2010 as Thaksin supporters known as 'Red Shirts', drawn mostly from rural areas, attempted to precipitate the new government's dissolution.
