Digital Image Analysis in Quantitative Metallography

Digital image analysis has become a highly developed technical tool with many possible applications in the field of metallography. The most important aspects of the software systems concerned are presented. Three concrete examples of their use, porosity analysis, grain size determination and diffusion distance analysis, are discussed. In the final example, additional electronic data post-processing of the raw data was required as the exis-ting evaluation functions were found to be inadequate. Th use of a separate programming tool in addition to the image analysis software is thereby shown to increase the capability of the entire system.
