Richards and colleagues report on the results of a series of focus groups with people living with type 1 diabetes, examining their experiences of health care. Those readers familiar with the literature on people's experience of chronic disease care will not be surprised by the findings. People with diabetes feel judged by health care professionals and desire to be acknowledged for their expertise in managing their diabetes. People value professionals who listen and treat them with respect, empathy and continuity of care.
