摘要

The dimerization of l-methylbenzocyclobutadiene, generated from 1-methyl-l-bromo-2-chlorobenzo-cyclobutene by dehalogenation with lithium amalgam, is accompanied by an unexpected oxidation process resulting mainly in the formation of an alcohol This alcohol was isolated from the crude reaction mixture by means of chromatographic techniques applied successively and characterized. Its structure was elucidated by means of 'H- and ~(13)C-NMR, IR, and Mass spectrometry. The reaction mechanism of this oxidation process is discussed.
