MICRO-ACOUSTICAL ANALYSIS AND CLASSIFICATION OF THE FRICATIVE /V/

A thorough analysis of the statistical acoustical features of the pronunciations of the /v/ consonant in the Romanian language, in the _/v/N contexts, that is in words starting with /v/ followed by a vowel reveal several different pronunciations. We determine that beyond the voiced / non-voiced/ fluctuating (voiced – unvoiced) classes, the /v/ in the _/v/V contexts fall into distinct subclasses. The results show that, while at the perceptive level Romanian speakers do not distinguish different /v/ pronunciations, at the acoustical level, the /v/ in Romanian spoken language has several forms.
