The following two papers discussing the role of low-glycaemic diets in obesity and health are reproduced: 'Low glycaemic diets and health: implications for obesity' by G. Livesey, pp105-113; and 'Expressing the glycaemic potency of foods' by J. Monro, pp115-122. The first article concludes that 'glycaemic load', the acute increase in exposure of tissue determined by foods, is the most useful concept. The second paper suggests the use of 'glycaemic glucose equivalent' to express glycaemic potency. The glycaemic glucose equivalent content of an amount of food is the weight of glucose that would induce a glycaemic response equal to that induced by the food.
