Lithium is the standard mood regulator for bipolar patients who have frequent or severe manic or depressive episodes (1). It is effective in preventing manic episodes and, to a lesser degree, depressive episodes. It also reduces the risk of suicide. Certain antiepileptics (valproic acid and its derivatives, and car-bamazepine) are second-line options (1).
