UK printers keen to go green, but EMAS still a low priority

Print companies are set to make up almost a third of UK businesses accredited with one of the most comprehensive environmental auditing processes in Europe. It follows the completion of a two-year BPIF-backed project in partnership with the European Commission (EC), which aimed to encourage more SMEs to take up the voluntary European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS). As part of the print-specific Prospec initiative, an EU-wide consortium of print bodies, the BPIF provided matched funding for 15 print firms to implement the EMAS audit and work towards accreditation. Launched in 1993, EMAS requires businesses to regularly assess, report and improve environmental performance with the aim of creating leaner, greener business processes.
