The next REACH registration deadline is more than four years away, while the EU CLP Regulation contains no deadlines for the classification and labelling of substances or mixtures that fall in 2014. European laws related to key downstream sectors – biocides, cosmetics and hazardous substances in electronics – have all come into force and should not face further revision any time soon. And in the US, chemical companies have until mid-2016 to fully comply with HazCom 2012, the standard on classification, labelling and SDSs in the workplace. But 2014 will be far from uneventful. New legislation, IT tools and guidance will emerge in countries like Taiwan, South Korea, Turkey and Russia, and more countries will follow Malaysia’s recent example and pass classification and SDS rules based on the GHS.
