REACH was a major theme as the oilfeldchemicals sector convened in Manchester inlate October for the latest Royal Society ofChemistry conference on chemistry in the oilindustry. Tere were two key issues oneveryone’s minds: harmonising REACH,which applies to ofshore chemicals, with thechemical control provisions of the Oslo-Paris(Ospar) Convention for the protection of themarine environment in the northeast Atlantic,which pre-date REACH; and learning how toregister substances under REACH, given thatfew needed to be registered by the frstdeadline in 2010.
