ECITB Working to Improve Safety in the North Sea

The ECIT6 is the statutory body with the responsibility for the training and development of the UK's engineering construction workforce and has an important role in helping to maintain and improve the level of competence in the oil & gas industry. "Unplanned hydrocarbon releases are a critical issue in terms of safety for the oil & gas industry and effective training can mitigate that risk," explained Blair Barclay, EClTB's Technical Programme Manager. "We analysed ourtraining in these two key areas, with a view to pinpointing where personnel were making mistakes. We found a number of hydrocarbon releases were attributable to improper fitting and the incorrect operation and maintenance in the specialist critical bolting and small bore areas."
