Realistic expectations

After the first registration deadline at the end of 2010, industry was acknowledged to have registered about 3,500 substances. But soon afterwards, we heard from different sources that the quality of dossiers was less than perfect. It was mentioned in the reports of ECHA, by individual member state authorities and by the European Commission in its REACH review. This immediately raises the question: what level of quality is expected by authorities, and are these expectations realistic? REACH is the result of more than 30 years’ regulation on chemicals in Europe. It aims to combine “the best of the best” and to provide a consistent, high standard of safety data for all substances on the European market.
