Nanomaterials in Canada

Like the US, Canada has yet to implement statutes or regulations specifically relating to nanomaterials. Instead, Canada has indicated that existing regulatory approaches and risk management strategies can do the job, and it has relied on existing legislation to control the production and use of nanomaterials, even though the legislation makes no reference to them. However, the country recognises that developing a new regulatory framework in risk assessment is necessary as nanotechnologies advance. This article provides an overview of recent regulatory developments and what is on the horizon, focusing on the activities of Environment Canada (EC) and Health Canada (HC), the ministries which jointly regulate nanomaterials.
