The US EPA has proposed a prohibition on the use of the solvent trichloroethylene (TCE) as an aerosol degreaser and for spot cleaning in dry cleaning facilities. The move represents the EPA’s first attempt to ban a substance, since a court overturned the agency’s 1989 section 6 rule banning asbestos. Many view this rulemaking as a key test of the effectiveness of the new TSCA law (8 December).
