摘要

The first attempt to develop blood compatible surfaces was made 45 years ago. Since that time an increased number of concepts and theoretical contributions were published via approximately 100 publications per year to improve hopefully the hcmocompatibility of surfaces. Ten years ago an expert group at a meeting of NHLBI stated that the literature is rife with controversy about what is blood compatible, there is no widely accepted definition of blood compatibility, no standardized blood tests and there is no synthetic material, which is blood compatible. The major problem impending advancement in blood compatible material is that only parts of the complete and complex picture that actually describes blood compatibility are typically considered by researchers. The interdisciplinary methods, such as hcmatology, technology and material science should bo integrated to appreciate the complex situation of blood compatibility.
