In the past decade there has been an explosion of interest in developing a service life prediction (SLP) methodology adapted particularly for organic coatings'. Some of the most elegant and quantitative work has been focused on automotive coating systems. These systems typically have a thormosct clear coat as their topmost layer. The ability of the clear topcoat to maintain its appearance, mechanical properties and barrier properties can be linked to the evolution of the integrity of the crosslinked molecular network which comprised the coating binder. The photochemical evolution of the binder network during weathering can be probed by a variety of techniques, such as vibrational spectroscopy, allowing for the possibility of quantitative service life prediction.
