Carboxylated latexes are generally prepared through emulsion copolymerization of various carboxylic monomers, such as acrylic acid (AA), methacrylic acid (MAA), itaconic acid, maleic acid and fumaric acid. Some workers have researched the effect of carboxylic monomers with different hydrophilicity on soap-free emulsion copolymerization. Sakota et al. have prepared stable soap-free carboxylated polystyrene latexes by copolymerizing styrene (St) with AA at a degree of neutralization of approximately 0.80 using a slight amount of sodium dodecyl sulfate. A hydrophilic monomer could make ease of homogeneous nucleation as it was used in a soap-free emulsion polymerization, and the introduction of carboxylic groups in the polymer chain could improve the colloidal stability.
