Durable transparent materials: electrospun nanofibers infused with transparent resin

There is a need for light-weight, impact resistant transparent materials for use in a variety of applications, which could include vehicle windows and windsheilds, hand held protective shields, face shields, and protective eyewear. Solutions using glass and layered polymer/glass composites have the disadvantage of adding a significant weight penalty to a given application and are generally restricted to use in vehicle systems. Applications requiring light weight, such as face shields and protective eyewear, usually employ a transparent polymer resin like polycarbonate(PC) or poly(methyl methacrylate).
