Hyperbranched polymers are a new frontier in polymer science and have received considerable attention in recent years. Their unique spherical molecular shape compared with their high surface functionality density may impart new unusual properties. Despite intense research efforts, methodologies of preparing these kinds of polymer materials are rather limited. Two strategies are currently employed. The most common is polycondensation of AB_m monomers and was recently developed by Kim and Webster. The second elegant access to hyperbranched polymers is the self-condensing vinyl polymerization introduced by Frechet and Coworkers.
