In restorative dentistry, enamel-dentin adhesives are used to achieve a strong bond between a composite filling material and dental hard tissues (dentin and enamel). Besides the solvent and the photoinitiator, the currently used self-etching dentin adhesives contain different monomer components: The mainly adhesive monomers [11, such as polymerizable phosphoric acids, e.g., 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate or methacryloyloxyethyl phenyl hydrogen phosphate, modify the enamel and dentin surface and mediates the formation of strong bonds between the dentin and the composite filling material [2], Furthermore, cross-linking monomers, such as bisphenol-A glycidyl dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA) or glycerol dimethacrylate (GDMA) are used in order to improve both the polymerization reactivity of the adhesive und the mechanical properties of the adhesive layer formed. For self-etching enamel-dentin adhesives water is primarily used as solvent. Thus, especially in the case of one-bottle adhesives, the methacrylates undergo hydrolysis of the methacrylate ester bond which changes the chemical composition of the adhesive and also deteriorates its performance. Therefore, new monomers with improved hydrolytic stability under acidic conditions are necessary.
