Prevention of post-surgical adhesions using electrospun bioabsorbable non-woven nanofiber membranes

Within the last ten years, as abdominal procedures are routinely practiced, adhesions have become a common cause of post-operative complications, which include small bowel obstruction, female infertility, chronic debilitating pain, and difficulty with future operations. Prevention of adhesions can decrease the incidence of post-operative complications and the overall hospital costs, as well as can ease the technical procedures for subsequent surgery. Although newer products have been attempted to fulfill the criteria for adhesion prevention, none can completely prevent adhesions in all situations. Thus, there remains a need for improved and inexpensive products that are effective in a variety of surgical situations for a greater number of patients.
