The importance of metalloporphyrins is well recognized. Metalloporphyrin complexes have been extensively studied in many functional chemistry fields such as photoelectronic conversition, non-linear optics, biomimetic studies and catalytic effect. To our knowledge, the first liquid crystalline porphyrin was synthesized by Goodby et al. In all of the studies of mesogenic porphyrin, the extended disc-like core has been peripherely substituted, therefore, it can be used as the basis for the construction of discotic material. Meso-tetra-(4-myristyloxyphenyl)porphyrin and its complexes have been published. According to the DSC thermogram, some of these compounds exhibit liquid crystal behavior, and have a low viscosity of liquid crystal phase and a broad mesophase range. Zn complex exhibits lower phase transition temperation at -7.453 ℃ and wide mesophase range in 77 ℃. Owing to these compouds's deep color and poor transparency, the technique of the Fourier transform infrared photoacoustic spectra is adopted to measure the spectra of these compounds. The main absorption bands are assigned.
