It's been a busy morning spent running errands in your pickup. And despite the warm spell lately, you've needed to keep the elderly truck idling all morning because the battery just won't turn the motor over anymore. You pull into the garage with a bed full of drywall and a brand new DieHard. But now that the hood's up, you notice a much bigger, scarier problem. And it has nothing to do with the battery. Your engine compartment is smoking - a lot. Yikes. The oily clouds wafting out from your engine have made the garage uninhabitable. You take a deep breath in the driveway and grab a fire extinguisher, assuming there's an oil fire on top of the engine. Well, it's your lucky day, sort of. There is no fire, just a big mess. The smoke is coming from the exhaust manifolds, which were red-hot a few minutes ago and are now ordoriferously vaporizing a runnel of oil dripping from the valve covers. No doubt about it: It's time to replace the valve-cover gasket.
