Commission calls for joined-up enforcement in member states

Better coordination at the national level between the various agencies responsible for REACH and CLP enforcement, including customs, is crucial if full compliance with the Regulations is to be achieved, the European Commission told delegates at its workshop on the issue on 1 March. Philippa Jones reports. Te responsibility of member states for the enforcement of REACH and CLP is of course vital for ensuring a level playing feld for companies across the EU market. But such complicated Regulations were always likely to throw up concerns about inconsistent implementation and enforcement by national agencies and government departments. Although the work of ECHA’s Enforcement Forum has been welcomed, the issue is one of those being looked at as part of the REACH review, with studies on the inspection requirements for REACH and CLP, and the implementation and enforcement of restrictions, among those that have been compiled.
