JGC Corporation developed a new concept,"GEFINERY~(TM)",which is an integration of power generation by advanced gas turbine and refining of residual oil [1,2].Advanced gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) has become a mainstream in power generation owing to its high efficiency of more than 50% on a high heating value basis with combustion temperatures of 1300 deg-C or higher.However,fuels for GTCC have been limited to relatively expensive light and clean fuels,such as natural gas,true distillate and synthetic gas.Application of heavy fuel oil is restricted due to vanadium and alkaline metals contained in it [3].Vanadium in fuel forms an inevitable corrosive vanadium compounds at elevated temperatures in turbine section.A typical requirement for advanced GTCC fuel is indicated in Table 1.Deep demetallization is a key to applying residual oil as a fuel for the GTCC system.
