Multi-photon microscopy is an important tool for imaging of fixed and living cells and tissue samples. For example it generates high-resolution 3D data of neurons in-vivo for the imaging and understanding of neuronal networks. Since its beginnings however, complex Ti:sap-phire lasers had to be employed. In the following we will present a compact and cost-efficient fibre laser system that provides femtosecond pulses at three IR-wavelengths to excite most fluorescent markers used for two-photon imaging. This ultrafast fibre laser is also the first commercial system for simultaneous multi-colour two-photon excitation with short acquisition times.
