In the 80s,the exploration work for crude oil off the Brazilian coast resulted in the discovery of the gigantic fields of Albacora,in 1984,and Marlin,in 1985,both in the Campos Basin.This has imposed on PETROBRAS the challenge of producing oil in deep waters.The reservoirs of these two fields corresponded to almost 3 billion barrels,therefore the company doubled itself to the task of developing technology to produce these oils and since then most of the Petrobras new petroleum discoveries have been carried out in offshore areas.
