摘要

Complex hydrocarbon mixtures require many different analytical approaches to address various science issurs. This paper describes an overall strategy of utilizing mass spectrometry coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (LC/MS) for the characterization of petroleum fractions, particularly for those with boiling points above 650 deg F. Normal phase HPLC is generlally used for analyzing all hydrocarbon types, and reverse phase HPLC is normally applied to polar fractoins with target analysis of specific classes of compounds. LC/MS can supplement GC/MS if compound type rather than boiling point separation is more desirable for mixture analysis.
