Light cycle oil (LCO), which is produced from a fluid catalytic cracking process (FCC), is used as a blending component in a wide range of fuels. Since it usually has several alkylated sulfur containing polyaromatics (1) and its aromatic content is high, it is necessary to reduce these compounds to use it as a fuel component (2). Within the series of Co-and Ni-promoted Mo or W sulfides supported on Al_2O_3, NiW has the highest hydrodesulfurization (HDS) and aromatic hydrogenation (AH) activity for LCO hydrotreating (3). However, it is necessary to improve the catalyst activity by modification because environmental regulations targeting sulfur and aromatic content are becoming more and more stringent.
