Fuel oil is one of the main refinery products, constituting about 18% of the average producet barrel. Overall world demand for the year 2000 was estimated at 600 million tonnes. Fuel oil production and handling is complicated by a number od developments. Refiners process a wider variation of crude oils than before, increased demands for distillate products result in increasing conversion levels in thermal and hydroconversion units, while the system is further constrained by a decrease in the number of storage tanks and the tendency to minimize any quality give-away. Figure 1 shows the average composition of the fuel oil pool.
