摘要

The general purpose of a lubricating fluid is to provide a protective coating to the solid surfaces preventing formation of adhesive junctions and reducing friction. Recent developments in the experimental techniques including the scanning tunneling microscope, the atomic-force microscope, and the surface-force apparatus, as well as computational techniques for simulating nanoscale structures have greatly advanced our understanding of the properties of lubricant thin films (1). It has been recognized that the molecular-scale lubricant often behaves in ways that would not be predicted on the basis of their bulk-scale behavior alone.
