As the concern to minimize the negative effects of sulfur compounds on environmental pollution and industry operations increases, more and more efforts have been devoted to the characterization of sulfur forms in heavy crude ends. It is generally believed that most of the sulfur compounds in vacuum residue (VR) are sulfoethers and thiophenes. In cocking reaction, the sulfoethers in VR are easily converted into gas sulfur compounds that can be recovered by absorption method, whereas the thiophenes are relatively difficult to be transformed into other forms. The results of investigation indicate that the content of thiophenic sulfur in Jinzhou VR is about more than twice that of sulfoetheric sulfur. Consequently, it is not surprising that the efficiency of sulfur removal is restricted by thermal conversion merely.
