In future aircraft thermally stable jet fuel will be used as the primary coolant for on-board heat sources such as engine lubrication oil, avionics, and the airframe. For planes flying at a high Mach number the temperatures of the surfaces have been predicted to reach as high as 900 deg F (1). Under these operating conditions conventional jet fuel, such as JP-8, is stressed to temperatures above its point of thermal stability, which leads to degradation and coke formation (2,3). Work at Penn State has shown that the inherent cyclic structure contents in coal-derived liquids may be upgraded into hydroaromatic and cycloalkane compounds, and these compounds have been shown to contribute towards high fuel stability at elevated temperature fuels (4-6).
