Industrial emissions of sulfur oxides (SO_x) in the atmosphere are a source of serious damage to the environment and to public health. In an effort to prevent further ecological degradation and to improve living conditions, particularly in heavily industrialized areas, government environmental agencies all over the world are imposing tighter limits on the maximum amounts of SO_x and other pollutants allowed to be discarded by the chemical process industry.
