The role of carbon sequestration in a national carbon management strategy

Carbon sequestration is the critical,"third-option",along with increased effciency of energy supply and use,plus the increased use of low-carbon and no-carbon energy sources.Together,these three options provide the ability to sustain economic growth through available and affordable energy,while meeting environmental goals.One of the most readily available and important pathways is through geologic sequestration.Also,natural processes convert CO_2 into other chemicals and materials.Longer term,there are significant possibilties fro new chemistry and biological/biomimetic processes to convert CO_2 into useful products.Near term and longer term carbon sequestration options,and projected future cost and sequestration potentials achievable with a concerted national R&D program in carbon sequestrationi are described.
