Bechtel National, Inc., with Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) Amoco Corporation, and M.W. Kellogg Company as subcontractors, conducted a study for the Department of Energy's (DOE) Federal Energy Technology Center to (a) determine the optimum process for upgrading coal-derived liquids in a petroleum refinery, and (b) to produce blended fuels that meet standards of the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) for the year 2000 and beyond. The following topics will be summarized: (a) production of coal-derived liquids, (b) upgrading four fractions of the coal-derived liquids in conventional petroleum pilot-plant units, (c) production of a coal-derived + petroleum blends of gasoline and diesel fuels, and (d) engine testing to determine concentrations of toxic missions.
