WHEN you stop and think about it, it's a system that makes a lot of sense: Reduce the high cost of raising a calf by reducing the high cost of feeding its mother. Often the best way to do that is to reduce the expense of overwintering the cow. So theSandhills System, as some call it, evolved a method where the cow would graze, it was hoped, for the entire year instead of being fed for several months on expensive, man-made feeds. The logic behind that, of course, is that the feed cost is not only theexpense of the forage, grain and supplements, but also the labor and equipment to feed them.
