MANY moons ago, I was a fledgling newspaper reporter covering the I Belleville/Metro East area. One of the first good political battles I reported dealt with a telecommunications tax in O'Fallon. The city wanted to levy an additional tax to pay for asports complex it wanted to build. The city council meetings were quite colorful as voters came to protest the potential new tax, which would amount to up to a few dollars per month. Supporters said the new sports park would bring in families from all over the area as their children competed in soccer, baseball and softball games. Plus, the community would benefit from walking trails and picnic areas.
