RURAL growers are quick to blame farmers fleeing urban development with bundles of 1031 exchange money for running up land values. Yet, state pension funds from Alaska to California to Illinois are back in the farmland hunt, according to Farmland Investor Letter. Funds are buying because: They expect to profit from land earnings, value appreciation or both. They are looking to diversify their portfolios. Both of the above.
