'Trade liberalization would help ag'

APPROXIMATELY one-third of U.S. crop acres are planted for export. Ag exports constitute about one-fourth of U.S. farm cash receipts. "U.S. farmers clearly gain from international trade," says Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa. "But more needs to be done. "High tariffs imposed by other countries significantly impede market access abroad for U.S. agricultural products," he notes. "At the same time, U.S. tariffs on agricultural imports are among the lowest in the world. The levels of subsidies provided by some of our major trading partners are significantly higher than those of the United States. In addition, some World Trade Organization members — unlike the United States — extensively use export subsidies."
