Pushes by major producers across Asia have seen prices climb for both coated and uncoated fine paper (CFP and UFP) despite persistently high supply. The move seems to have got some traction from the expectation of good seasonal demand during the second quarter. However, the hikes have mostly been ascribed to a scramble by mills to shore up prices during the first half of the year to insulate themselves against falls when the slow summer season hits at the end of Q2. CFP prices are presently clocking in at $720-770/tonne, up $20/tonne from the final quarter of 2013.
