About two years ago, an electric cooperative in Spokane, Washington, began researching the benefits of LED technology. Inland Power and Light Co. GIS and Facilities Coordinator Pat Osborn was interested in transitioning the co-op's 4,000 rural area lights to LEDs, which consume about one-third the energy of high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights. LEDs also can function more than five times longer without losing brightness. Plus, LED bulbs provide a more pleasant white glow compared with the harsh, yellow light of HPS bulbs. Osborn and Inland Power decided to move forward with the fleet conversion.
