BRUSSELS—The European Commission Jan. 29 warned European Union member states around the Baltic Sea that it would "not hesitate to intervene" if it believes environmental impact assessments carried out on the proposed Nord Stream gas pipeline are not in accordance with EU law. EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas, speaking to a European Parliament hearing on the project, said Nord Stream "should comply with all relevant environmental rules of international and [EU] law, during the stages of its construction, operation, and monitoring."
